1 out of 5 stars Don't Get it STAY AWAY   July 12, 2007

I got this DVD player 2 weeks ago and it is already dead! - It is very slow to load a dvd or eject a DVD ~ 20 seconds. Then when I had issues with it not recognizing a DVD I whent on the network and downloaded a firmware upadate. This then killed all my HD capacity and now I only have regular dvd playback. Toshiba support said wait for another firmware update to see if it could fix it but did not say when probably a few months or more. Oh how I wasted $500 on this junk!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent HD Experience, Low Cost ,too!   March 8, 2007
I just purchased a close-out Toshiba HD XA1 and the new Mitsubishi HD1000U 720p HD projector. Total cost for both items (new factory fresh) with shipping was $1260 (plus the five free HD DVD offier from Toshiba). Took out my old gear, hooked up the new using my existing 92" diagonal screen and universal ceiling mount. Ran a new 25' HMDI cable. A little bit of system set-up, less than I expected. The first movie up was Batman Begins, from Netflix, because of its HD reviews and use of the Dolby TrueHD hi-rez sound. Wow. That was the best $1260 I ever spent. 92" of bright clear hi-def for less than a typical 720p HDTV these days. Really really nice image and great sound using the 5.1 analog outputs (allowing the HD XA1 to do the TrueHD decoding). Again, I was prepared for a lot of fiddling to get it set-up -- but my out-of-the-box experience was very simple. The HD XA1 even had the Firmware 2.0 update installed from the factory -- ready to go with 5.1 TrueHD sound. I suggest more folks look into this combo of player and projector for a cost-effective HD home theater solution.

5 out of 5 stars $500 down the drain   February 17, 2007

Got it in the mail from Amazon (or sub-vendor) the other day.

Terrible set-up and out-of-the-box experience. Got same cryptic error as other reviewer when I first tried to play an HD-DVD. Relatively quick and painless firmware download fixed initial problems (or get update disk from Toshiba, insert, and it fixes self). Manual barely helped - Toshiba needs to pay a few more cents per unit to hire ENGRISH SPEAKING manual writers - terrible.

Followed instructions for online (connected to internet) frirmware update). MONTHS OF TRYING - NOW NOTHING SHOWS UP ON TV MONITOR OR FRONT PANEL OF HD-DVD PLAYER. NOTHING WORKS! I'M TRYING TO GET MY MONEY BACK FROM TOSLHIBA. THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST CONSUMER PRODUCT EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. TOSHIBA, YOU ARE THE WORST!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware. Toshiba Has No Respect For There Customers!   February 7, 2007

I bought this machine in November hoping to get the best hd experience possible. The machine constantly gave me an "HDMI Error 1" message. So I Got the firmware 2.0 online. Same problem. I called Toshiba and explained so they sent me the same firmware on CD. Same problem, duh. I was told. Not to send it back but send it in to them.I did and got it back. Same thing. So buy this time I couldnt get my money back from the company I got it from on Amazon. So Toshiba being the kind souls that they are said to send it in again. Big surprise...........same problem.Long story short Toshiba told me that I'm out of luck and that its a compatability issue. Thats it ,no sorry we released a product before testing it for issues. No refund. Not even a refund on the shipping I had to pay to send it to them. Just a big "tough luck". And If anyone has only component out.......which does work, thats great.Until someone desides to activate the restraint token to down res all hd material to 480p. I guess thats what I get for showing some faith in Toshibas first gen product.Buyer Beware.
