Good but some concerns August 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used my TX-SR875 for about seven months and have been very happy with the performance. I was concerned about the heat and have been using an external fan to create some additional cooling. However, the front panel LED display has failed completely with no warning. Web searches have revealed that this is a common problem. I am fortunate enough to have an authorized service center within a reasonable drive and it is covered under warranty. However, if you are not so lucky, you might want to consider the cost and inconvenience of shipping the unit for repair.
Near perfect July 28, 2008 The price and feature set makes this an excellent choice. Yes, it runs hot but not near as hot as others have experienced. I have it in a cabinet with an open front and back but no more than an 1.5 inches of clearance on the sides and top.
Great reciver for the price July 20, 2008 Installation went smooth and once up and running it has worked great. I have my Wii, PS3, IPOD, and Time Warner cable box connected. Receiver does run hot but if you leave space above it will be fine. Overall a great receiver for the price.
Was so Happy .. until Sparks and smoke!!!!! July 9, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have done a lot of research before purchasing this receiver.. great sound...kinda easy setup... I was so happy.... 2 week after purchasing, playing Xbox360 at low volume first the video went out follow by sparks, boom noise and plenty of smoke! This unit was know to overheat so i install it alone and VERY WELL VENTILATED area... The Onkyo service.... miserable... I was polite,, i've try to be very kind and all.... i went to a manager that couldn't care less about consumer satisfaction. Don't do the same mistake as me. don't walk away from this unit... RUN!!!!
Great Bang for the Buck July 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well let me start this by saying that I am an extremely picky person when it comes to home audio. I have gone through a lot of different units in an atempt to find the perfect one. Before settling on the 875, I was in the world of separates, but unfortunately the Outlaw processor I had did not have HDMI inputs and of course did not have the ability to decode the latest and greatest hi def audio.
So I tried an 805, actually running analog cables from it to my Parasound 5250 amp and using the 805 as a preamp. I was not pleased with the sound or picture. Yeah it was great to have the HDMI inputs and all the latest surround codecs, but something seemed missing from the music that was played through it.
So I thought I would give Onkyo one more try and bought an 875 to try out. I was very glad I did. Music (I love to listen to redbook CDs, that's probably what I use it the most for) on the 805 seemed muddled in comparison with the 875. The 875 performed so well I decided to run it by itself and disconnect the external Parasound amp. I actually liked the sound better running off the Onkyo's amps which really surprised me. I have read that Onkyo really isolated the preamp section of this receiver as compared to the 805.
I also like the video upconversion section of this receiver. It does a great job of taking any signal and upconverting it using the REON chip to 1080P out through the HDMI output. Now it doesn't work miracles with all video coming in, but I have noticed that my DVD collection has taken on new life.
So in review I would say that this receiver has exceeded my expectations inasmuch so that when Outlaw releases there new processor I don't think I'll be buying it. This receiver does everything that I need and is a wonderful addition to my home.
A few warnings: -This receiver gets very hot, even when just sitting powered on with nothing running through it. -There is a "DTS Bomb" that will occasionally occur. What this means is while viewing hi def DTS content there will be a loud explosion of static that occurs in the speakers. At first I thought it was the BluRays I was watching. Scared the crap out of me a couple of times. Onkyo has released a firmware update that is supposed to correct this problem. After installing it I have not noticed the problem since.
