JVC DVD-VCR Recorders get worse by the model!! October 22, 2008 This is my second JVC Dvd/VCR recorder. And my last. Within 5 months of buying it, it needed a major repair costing more than the unit cost me retail; fortunately ITS PARTS were covered in warranty except for the labor, which was also substantial. Not TWO MONTHS out of repair warranty and 3 months out of the 1 year parts warranty, it refuses to read ANY store bought/studio DVDs, and needs another repair according to JVC. I have cleaned the lens according to JVC and reset the unit a dozen times. It is a clunker. A lemon.
I highly recommended the DR-MV5, JVC's sturdy earlier combo recorder model; I highly DIS-recommend this model. Apparently I am not the only consumer who has run into this shoddy build quality and high failure rate. The regretful thing is, this unit, when it WORKED, did burn beautiful DVDs. Its record quality is great, however, as you will encounter increasingly, the good TV series are now encrypting their shows, so you cannot record them from TV anymore, and this unit enforces that encryption. It is not defeatable. With the recorder breaking down every few months, that is not reliability I can depend on.
Add that to poor quality control, and defect/failure rates in the range these customers are reporting, and to me, that makes this one unreliable waste of money.
Unfortunate, because JVC used to have a splendid reputation. Some JVC products I have had before had lifespans in the decades. Those days are evidently gone.
JUNK-KIND September 28, 2008 This unit, JVC MV78BUS, purchased 6 months ago gave great upconvert performance on both DVD and VHS. But now it has stopped working and will not read the DVD. After six tries it locks up and will not even shut off--so I have to pull plug. Putting it back in later -still does not work. I was treated very poorly by Square Trade warranties. As this was an ebay purchase I was assured that Square Trade is a greeat deal. But they just shifted me over to JVC to have it fixed. And then I find that to be a bogus deal as well because it is not fully covered. So at this point I feel it is a complete train wreck.
Was Great Until Day 6!! September 20, 2008 Unfortunately, I did not do my research before buying this JVC. Mine didn't even last a week before I began having problems with no sound and disk errors.
Throwing Mine in the Garbage August 10, 2008 I've had my unit for 8 months, and it has ceased to function entirely. It will not even play a dvd, much less record one. Calling JVC customer support was a waste of my time. As only the parts are warrantied, I will probably end up just throwing the thing out. One thing for sure, I will not be buying anything with the JVC name on it ever again.
