Great player if you know how to choose the right seller July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pioneer doesn't officially make an all-region version of this player, so what you get depends on who did the custom modification and using what (hardware/software). The all-region feature may or may not have been properly enabled or the "special" capability may be "lost" after unplugging the unit from the outlet if not properly enabled. I bought one that was enabled properly (I believe so far after more than a few months of usage) and works fine for any region (1 to 6) even after an extended power outage during a winter. My suggestion to other buyers is to ask the seller serious questions and quarantee of refund if not as described before hitting any button to buy. If no quarantee, don't buy it or you may regret later.
This machine basically plays everything I have and more. Digital video via HDMI is as good as my Sony player. Digital audio via HDMI or coaxial out is second to none although this unit doesn't have the optical digital audio output that my Sony has. However, the Sony doesn't play as many types of discs and is Region 1 and NTSC only (no PAL). I will keep this Pioneer DVD player and replace my Sony DVD player with a Sony blu-ray player.
best region free dvd player out there June 18, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
First of all, there are two versions of this model on Amazon, Region 1 and Region Free. I see that most of the sellers do not know the difference between the two versions. I bought mine from All-Region-World and they confirmed that it was guaranteed to play my European Region 2 DVDs and it does.
Truly, the Best unit out there!! Picture is amazing! I connected it to my new HD TV using the HDMI cable and the Pioneer solved problem of pixelated picture. Great 1080P upconversion and plays my Divx flawlessly. This unit plays every thing and any DVD from any region out of the box. I highly recommend this Pioneer DVD player.

awesome picture using the 1080p setting. How could anyone complain about this unit for the price.
DVD Player is NOT as represented by Amazon May 13, 2008 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased this item because I needed a all-region DVD player that would handle both NTSC and PAL formats, and because Amazon represents this player as satisfying both of these needs. It does NOT do so!
Upon opening the box about an hour ago, I started reading the manual, and I quickly became suspicious of the player's all-region and PAL compatibilities. I called customer service at the supplier, ButterflyPhoto, who confirmed my suspicion that this player does NOT play DVDs coded for regions other than Region 1 and does NOT handle DVDs using the PAL format.
I then called customer service at Amazon; their story is that the manufacturer claimed to them (i.e., Amazon) that the player handles non-Region 1 and PAL-formatted DVDs.
In any case, I am returning the player to ButterflyPhoto, who--to their credit--immediately authorized the return upon hearing my complaint.
This MAY be a perfectly adequate player for Region 1 NTSC DVDs. But if you are considering purchasing it as an all-region, PAL-compatible player, my advice is: Don't.
