Good features, but a bit buggy September 23, 2008

Has a number of good features like a recording/copying guide that makes recording, copying, erasing, etc. pretty simple. However, the unit seems to have a couple of bugs. For one, sometimes when I put in a VHS or DVD, I can't control it (stop, rewind, ff, etc.) until I switch control focus and then go back (if I put in a VHS, I have to switch control from VHS to DVD and then back). Another issue I found is when copying from VHS to DVD, syncing isn't exact, so the DVD misses the first few seconds of the VHS. Which means you have to set the VHS start point to a few seconds before where your content actually starts. So the bugs do have workarounds, but they're still a bit frustrating. Fortunately, I didn't pay full price - I got a refurbished one.

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING, THESE GUYS WHO CAN'T OPERATE A MACHINE AS SIMPLE AS THIS ONE SHOULD GET A GED AND TRY AGAIN. I USE MY MACHINE DAILY FOR OVERA YEAR AND IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!
MP3 Music Picture Disc August 27, 2008

If you put mp3 music in the root directory and JPG picture in a folder of ur disc, it will automatically play music and scroll through the pictures at the same time, other things for improvement: stopping recording DVD kinda takes long around 15-30 seconds it should be an instance stop, though once press record it does it right away, because once stop it makes new tracks for next recording creating a new chapter on the disc, it include a DVDRW for transport to ur computer! I wonder if there is a firmware that update the DVD player to support my audio and video codes, the code could be install on each disc instead since there are so many codes out there, I mean it could load it to the dvd player video processors and start playing the disc!

I've had this Lite-on machine for over a month now and it has worked great! It's easy to record off the TV onto a vhs tape or a DVD-RW. The on-screen programming guide makes it very easy. There are a lot more expensive machines (with big brand names) that do not work as well as this unit, and quite a few of them don't even have a TV Tuner, meaning you can't record programming off of your television set, this Lite-on does have a TV Tuner, which is quite important to me so I can tape my beloved Gators football games.
I've had zero problems with this Lite-on 9016G, I highly recommend it. I did quite a bit of DD, and to me, for under $100.00, this is one of the Best Buys on the web. And BTW, the motor of the VHS unit is incredibly fast. You can rewind a full tape in less than 35 seconds!!
Good for transitioning to DVD-R July 9, 2008

I got this cheap on eBay, it was refurbished, but had a big problem, the tape deck mechanism was missing a few screws and wouldn't take tapes until I fixed it. It uses a Lite-on DVD-RW drive that can be pulled out and put into a PC if needed since it is ATA based. The software on the device is slow to start up and playing a DVD. Probably because it has to pick a driver for the unit inside. I learned something about these things, which is why I said this is a good transitioning device. Due to little memory for constructing a progressive stream, DVD recording is in interlaced mode, which is worthless to me. I was hoping to copy videotapes to DVD for importing into my PC, but when I checked the video stream on my PC, I could see interlacing, as well as frames blended together. It appears that it scans the input data in a smaller frame, and upconverts the encoding to 720x480 29.97 frames, which is only good for TV viewing, not for archiving. Another fault is common with the Lite-on brand: The closed-captioning signal sometimes get cropped off the display output. This appears to occur after a certain signal is detected, possibly as a result of a crudely/poorly performed transition in a TV station's master signal. It is probably because of the PAL-compatibility mode it has - I discovered that by testing it with a video stream from a game CD on my Shinco 868, and it somewhat displays the image, but only the top 4/5ths as the image is pushed down. A fix to accurately center a PAL signal as well as keeping the closed captioning stream active would be great. So this recorder isn't perfect, it has output limitations, not putting any data from the VCR, DVD or other video inputs (other than coaxial input) through the coaxial NTSC output. It's perfect for familiarizing yourself with the needs of a DVR until you find a better unit. It's good for the kid's room, and great for recording video game play sessions. It's also good for recording stuff that you won't care about having PERFECT videos of. However, you should shop around a bit more if you want something that will produce archival quality videos.
