Amazon.com Product Description Save space in your entertainment center and enjoy vivid, colorful video with the 30-inch Westinghouse LTV-30W2 LCD TV, featuring a super-bright, HD-ready widescreen display and a stylishly thin, wall-mountable and frame-ready design. It has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner and it's capable of displaying high definition TV signals with an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box. In addition to HDTV functionality, this set can also be used as a PC monitor via the DVI and VGA inputs. It comes with a tabletop stand that's removable for wall mounting (with optional hardware). The LTV-30W2 has a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution, 16ms (millisecond) response time, 170-degree viewing angle, 550 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating--perfect for viewing colorful details in even direct sunlight--and 600:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) It's capable of displaying 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i high-definition video. This set provides a unique 5:3 aspect ratio, which is right between the standard TV aspect ratio of 4:3 and HDTV widescreen 16:9 ratio. It features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi deinterlacing and scaling technology to up-convert standard video in DVDs to HD resolutions. DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology eliminates the jagginess that conventional upconverters introduced to diagonal edges in video. FaroudjaOs unique DCDi algorithm identifies all the moving edges in a scene and adjusts the angle of interpolation at each pixel so that the interpolation always follows the edge instead of crossing it, eliminating staircasing or jagged edge artifacts. The 3D comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. This set also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. Other video processing features include 3D-de-interlacing and progressive scan conversion, low-angle interpolation, and 3D digital upscaling (often beyond HD resolution). Other convenience features include an adjustable backlight for ambient lighting and power savings, picture-in-picture capability, closed caption decoding, and V-Chip parental controls. It has two side-mounted stereo speakers that produce 18 watts of total audio power (9 watts per channel). It offers the following connection options: - Composite AV (RCA): 2 in
- S-Video: 1 in
- Component Video: 2 in
- DVI: 1 in
- PC VGA: 1 in
- RF: 1 in
- Headphone: 1
Tech Talk Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. DVI (Digital Video Interface) provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source to a digital display device. This universal standard for connecting flat-panel monitors is also used for data projectors, plasma displays, and digital TVs. Other reviewers don't do it justice May 8, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I just purchased this TV, and I am very pleased with it. I did not expect fancy features and surround-like sound, but a basic LCD TV that was inexpensive and expandable. I actually like the fact that it doesn't have a built-in HDTV tuner - that lets the price stay low (I will call up my cable company to upgrade to HDTV in a few days). Without HDTV, the picture quality isn't the best when you're close up, but with HDTV (as I saw in the store) it's just as great as the more expensive brands. The salesman told me how customers come back and complain about the picture quality, but this kind of TV is made to be used with HDTV (evident with the display model they had). The sound isn't bad - it's good enough for this price (for reviewers who complain about this - you get what you pay for, and if you want better sound quality, go for a more expensive model). My set has no dead pixels at all, and unlike what others said, the remote works fine. The menu can get a bit confusing to use, but it's manageable. The documentation is minimal, but you can probably find more info on it online. Overall, I am very happy for finding an LCD for such a low price (I went to J&R for it - great service, the set is priced at $799.99 in store and $699.99 on their site, they were happy to give it to me for the online price). I recommend it for people who really want an LCD but can't afford one over $1,000. I'm looking forward to getting HDTV, and enjoying years with this LCD TV.
Looks nice...sounds AWFUL.. March 20, 2006 15 out of 22 found this review helpful
Just purchased & RETURNED this tv. We were thrilled when we took it out of the box..until we set it up. The sound is AWFUL. The sound waves from very low to extremely loud - so loud that it actually makes a popping noise. And, no it wasn't only when commercials came on - it is continuous. Unfortunately for us I did not do any sort of research before purchasing the tv. Now that I've put in a couple of searches on this tv, I see that I wasn't the only person who had issues with the sound. It seems to be the #1 complaint on this model. It is unfortunate because Westinghouse is a good name brand. We did return this set and purchase a slightly more expensive model that is not a Westinghouse. Hope this helped out.
Very Pleased With This Sharply-Focused TV February 8, 2006 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I've owned this TV monitor for six months now, and I am delighted with my purchase. I had been searching for a flat-screen TV that was reasonably-priced and had a good, sharp picture. I compared this TV in a store to several others in its price range. This was the clear winner. It has a beautiful picture and great sound. (I am pleased that my TV has no dead pixels, either.)
This is a monitor, not a TV, so you do need a cable box. I have a digital HD box through Adelphia cable. The HD channels on this TV are outstanding. The persons on screen might as well be standing in front of you. I have never tried to use this as a computer monitor, so I cannot speak to how it would work, but it is a wonderful TV. And, despite Westinghouse's reputation for having bad remotes, the remote control on this TV works well. It is very easy to switch from HDTV to regular TV.
All in all, I am delighted. My only regret is not having bought a larger Westinghouse TV -- but that would have meant paying much more!
