Amazon.com Product Description
Prepare yourself for amazingly brilliant imagery from the 50-inch Syntax-Olevia LCT50HV projection LCoS television--perfect for creating a true cinema experience in your own home. It features a built-in, 181-channel NTSC TV tuner, and can receive high-definition television broadcasts with an optional HD receiver. Despite its extra-large screen size, the LCT50HV is surprisingly thin at just 19.3 inches deep.

Similar to DLP televisions, the LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) reflective technology uses liquid crystals instead of individual mirrors. Liquid crystals are applied directly to the surface of a silicon chip coated with an aluminized layer making it highly reflective. As the liquid crystals open and close, the light is either reflected from the mirror below, or blocked. In this three-panel design, one display chip is assigned to each color and the images are combined optically.

This set has a 1388 x 780-pixel native resolution, with maximum resolutions of 1280 x 1024 from a VGA connection and 1920 by 1200 from a DVI connection. It also offers a 10,000-hour lamp life, 170-degree viewing angle, 16:9 aspect ratio, 1000 nits brightness rating, and 1000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) Other features include picture-in-picture (PIP) capability, picture still, picture enlargement, noise reduction, and a motion compensated deinterlacer.

The LCT50HV performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. A 3D Y/C digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

It pumps out a total of 50 watts of total audio power (25 watts per channel) and provides an excellent virtual surround sound field. It offers the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA) In: 3
  • Composite AV (RCA) Out: 1
  • S-Video In: 2
  • Component In (Y, Pb/Pr): 1
  • Component In (Y, Cb/Cr): 1
  • DVI-I In: 1
  • PC In (D-Sub 15-pin): 1

What's in the Box

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware: Cheap for a reason   December 20, 2005

It seemed like a great deal, but I offer potential buyers some words of caution.
In short, this is a HDTV monitor that would be great if only it worked reliably, and was supported by more than a shoestring staff.
The only way I would advise anyone purchase the LCT50HV is if they know someone at Syntax that can get them free replacement bulbs for life.
Since a dead TV is useless, regardless of its specs. The best I can give this monitor is 1 star.

Here's why:
I was thrilled when I got my 50 Syntax LCT50HV LCoS RP-TV for a fraction of what other brands were going for. It has darn near every input option on the market (and all that I needed, including a VGA input, component, composite, S-video), a reasonable form-factor, and a great picture. Sure, the cooling fan was a bit louder than any other RP-TV I've ever been around, but my media center PC sits near it an is loud too, so it did not bother me much. It appeared to fit my needs nearly perfectly.

Then the supposed "10,000 hour" bulb died after about 500 hours of use (4 months).
After a real hassle getting through to Syntax tech support they sent (via slow UPS ground across the US) a replacement bulb for me to install. I am fairly mechanically adept, so that didn't bother me. Although my wife commented that she certainly would not be comfortable replacing the bulb. Syntax offered to send a technician to replace the bulb, but that would take around 3 weeks.
With the bulb replaced, my problem was solved, right? Just temporarily. About 500 hours later (4 more months...TV is now ~8 months old) guess what happened... you got it, the bulb died suddenly.
Once again, tech support is nearly impossible to get through to, but eventually I did, and they are shipping another bulb.
The tech support folks don't want to look into the possibility that mine is a defective TV, so I am left to assume that this is normal actual bulb life... not to be confused with advertised bulb life.

I've searched the internet and found NOBODY that has replacement bulbs (based on the TV model or the numbers on the Philips bulb itself), so it looks like the only option is to call Syntax for replacements for the life of the TV. I'm afraid to find out how much that will cost, once my 1 yr warranty runs out.
