Amazon.com Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri

Fading urgencies November 8, 2008 The follow up to their breakout album is neither outstanding nor terrible, often straddling a muddled line between trademark jarring, off-kilter sensibilities and radio-friendly catchiness with a more self-conscious approach then how they effortlessly merged that duality in the past. Brock's vocals, now contrived when it used to sound unhinged, affirms how the group still may be capable of creating music from solid ingredients, though rarely combine all the flavors in satisfying measures.
Good music! October 13, 2008 Like most other Modest Mouse records, this is an excellent disc, if erratic. It hits on most songs though, and I like it. It's more poppy than their previous releases, but I still think it's a good sound. Four stars.
Good buy minus one little scratch September 16, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this item "like new" assuming the cd would be scratch and skip free, but unfortunately it skips on the last song every time. I can deal with the one scratch for the price though.
Spitting Truth September 12, 2008 Ever since a good friend introduced me to Modest Mouse, I've been hooked. This album is a shoe-in. I love the attention "Spitting Venom" is getting in these reviews as it is my favorite on this album-barely beating "Dashboard" I think this album is good for newcomers, while longtime fans will select their favorites and leave the rest for a later mood. I would like to say that Brock's social commentary is something like candy for me. If you like it check out The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon And Antarctica.
Great, even for die-hard fans! September 10, 2008 I am a die-hard fan myself. I have all the albums, and i love every single one. This one, one of the best. I never looked at this, "a shot at mainstream". This is another great album by the best band on earth. It's different, but not desperate. This is still Isaac Brock.
