5 out of 5 stars mind bending bass!!!   November 29, 2008
If you are a bass adict like me, buy these mind bending bass blasters. the sound is awesome and crisp. highs and mids don't suffer and they are worth every penny. yes they are huge but not uncomfortable by any means. if you try to be cheap, you get what you pay for. i have senn. 300 and they are cool and bass is ok, but these smoke em and i all but waisted $40 on them except that i now have a back up pair for yard work pair and rainy walks. highly recommend.

ps. i said in an earlier review of the senn. 300 that i don't know why you would pay so much for these but i now put foot in mouth and would pay double the price.

I recently purchased the fi5 EB's when an impulse turned curiosity into a purchase.
My previous buds were $25 Koss noise isolating (not noise cancelling) buds that satisfied my needs.
Upon receipt of the fi5's, I discovered instruments and voices previously unheard to the point I found myself laughing. I'm no audiophile but the fidelity lacking in the $25 buds was immediately apparent.
Is $150+ worth the investment? If the cost isn't too prohibitive, I suggest yes.
An analogy: If you are quite happy with the Television you own and you go to a dinner party and see the new wiz-bang model plasma-LCD (insert technology here), your home experience is forever blemished.

Bottom line, yes, I would repeat the purchase.
An aside, when the new wears-off and if I can auction my wife and kids for enough money, I can see myself upgrading to the step-next in Ultimate Ears product line.

I really wanted to like these as I was looking for something that could provide that extra oomph when listening to bass. As other reviewers have said, bass is incredibly powerful and I do have to turn off bass booster on my iPod otherwise, it just becomes overpowering. Sound quality overall is very, very good overall and getting a good seal was relatively easy. They sound a heck of a lot better than the SE210.

However, the two biggest knock I have against these is that 1) they are just not comfortable and 2) boy are they ugly. They are HUGE, big and bulky (not to mention ugly) and I do get tired after wearing them for more than an hour or so. They don't stick out of your ear a little bit, they stick out A LOT. I suppose if you like the Frankenstein look, it wouldn't bother you, but yeah, it definitely looks like you're walking around with bolts in your ear. You definitely won't be able to sleep in them, or at least turn your head while lying down. I ordered the white ones as well, and they're not white, more like an ivory/eggshell type of color.

5 out of 5 stars best earbuds around   November 2, 2008
This was my second pair of these. I had to buy them again after my dog ATE my first pair that I had for over 2 years, and couldn't stand buying anything else. They have a great bottom end and sound pretty damn good. I use them as in-ear-monitors for playing live drums with my band, and every day at work hooked up to my Zune. The best thing is the cable is replaceable, so they're not garbage if you ruin the cable. I snagged the cable on a sharp piece of metal at work and caused a short. I bought a $20 replacement and they were good as new. The earbuds are super efficient too so they can get LOUD!!!!! without distorting. You can get better ones but you'll pay hundreds more.

4 out of 5 stars UE 5 EB Better Fit Hints   October 29, 2008
After mangling my Etymotic 6i set which were great but little bass, I got the UE 5 EBs based on reviews. Fantastic, unparalleled sound, except for fit-would not stay in, poor isolation and, poor comfort on long flights. Put these on drawer and got the Shure E4c s. Good comfort, but does not compare to the full rich sound of the UEs.

Solution?? Got the Comply custom 5 EB closed foam tips direct from Comply which took care of the comfort and noise isolation equaling the 6is. Plus......simply reverse the preformed over ear coop cables and the earplugs them selves which makes the insertion a lot easier. Somehow this allows the cables to loop over the ears without a side pressure which in turn tends to put an unbalanced pressure on the plugs themselves. When fitted, no other plugs that I have tried can produce the full rich sound to compare to the UE 5 EB's.
