5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with these... period.   December 1, 2008
I purchased them because of its great review on CNET. I decided to use them for 3 months and then write this review.

I use them primarily while working out (perfect for jogging because ear plates keep them secure) and for viewing movies on my laptop. I JUST LOVE WATCHING MOVIES WITH THIS ON. Sound quality is superb. 3D nature of the sound is just astounding. Plus, music is crisp and clear - you can hear even the soft notes clearly.

They are pretty comfortable. I have owned in-ear type headphones and have disliked them (have owned Shure and Sennheiser). So, I purchased these over-the-ear type. The speaker is large enough to cover the ears and perhaps that's why you get such rich sound.

Headband is adjustable, and yes, your hair will get caught. The adjustable ear plates are a good feature to have because I do believe one size doesn't fit all when it comes to headphones. And, yes, they are UGLY.

The only complaint I have is the case that comes with it; it's mouth is too small. I hope it is not designed for the Porta Pros because I have tried and tried but I can't get my headphones folded enough to slide them in the case without shoving them in there... or once in, I can't get them out without yanking the headphones out. It is very attractive case but useless.

For the sound and price, these are it for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great audio quality   November 30, 2008
I've been spoiled by some Stax electrostatic headsets that I enjoyed for several years but unfortunately they have now died.

This time I wanted a headset that didn't need any special driver and decided to try the very inexpensive Koss PortaPro.

Frankly speaking, at first, I was quite disappointed when I received this fairly cheap looking headset. Koss has visibly not spent much money on either packaging or the mechanical parts.

But...

Then when I tried them I realized why people rate them so high. They do indeed combine a very transparent and crystal clear sound with a good solid bass. Now I've forgot the cheap packaging and found that although the plastic finish and design of the PortaPro is also quite cheap-looking, it really doesn't matter much because they feel quite comfortable to wear and sound much better than anything at this price point. Also you need to get used to losing a hair once in a while as it gets trapped between the two headband metal strips.

When you get these on and listen...the cons really mean nothing; and you can enjoy listening for hours without feeling any discomfort.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal in headphones   November 29, 2008
The Koss PortaPros are by far the best sub-$50 I've ever heard. The balance between highs, mids, and bass stays great even at higher volumes, but the power of these headphones has me listening to them at 10/50 on my laptop.

The case they come with was just a small leather bag for me, and it was in pretty bad condition from the packaging, but seeing as how I don't really care about the case that much, it was fine. The headphones fit in it pretty well, and it is a pretty snug fit.

The blue adjusters make quite the difference in comfort and whenever I wear them on light I tend to forget I'm even wearing headphones. However, the steel band tends to want to unadjust itself and has a hard time staying in place if it isn't set to the max, which can be annoying.

Solely on sound quality for the price, I would give it a 5, although it is pretty heavy on the bass side. But with the steel band being a bit annoying at times, I would give the Koss PortaPros a 4.5 if i could. Overall, they're a great headphone and I would buy them again in an instant.

5 out of 5 stars Great   November 24, 2008
These headphones are a bit to good. If you listen to low quality MP3s you will be disappointed since these pick up all the little clicks due to poor MP3 compression. The high end is a little harsh at times but that is mostly due to poor mixing. Overall PortaPros are great for higher quality audio and they fold up nice for portability.

5 out of 5 stars Koss PortaPro Headphones Excel at their job   November 23, 2008
We first experienced these headphones in the 90's when visiting the Science museum in Chicago and were blown away by their frequency response and accuracy. My daughter has been using ear-bud type phones - you know, the type furnished with the iPod. She began complaining about ear pains when listening via this type of headphone over a two year period, yet would not use my huge ear-cup type that I find comfortable. Not only were ear-cup phones inconvenient to lug around, friends were going to really make fun of her - she stated to me. We bought and tried 3 different types of on-ear headphones at various stores before recalling that I had seen the Koss phones on-line. I took yet another plunge and ordered them from Amazon. My daughter was skeptical at first, but once she had evaluated the sound quality, lack of weight, high level of comfort, low size form factor, ability to fold in to a compact form, and intelligent design, they became a hit. We bought them for approximately $32.00 and I ended up buying a second pair for myself from J&R. Strongly recommended for those who insist on minimizing hearing loss into old age and like listening to non-distorted, true-to-life music.
