Excellent Balance of Quality & Price June 28, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What makes a good component cable good and a bad component cable bad? You first have to recognize that the cable used for most component cables is simple RG59 coaxial cable. This is the same very basic type of cable that the cable company uses. While some companies might have you believe that their cable is made from some space age material and that you need to shell out a hundred bucks in order to get the possible picture, don't believe it. You can get a good cable for under twenty bucks.
What makes one cable different from another? Mostly, it's the shielding and the connector. The shielding is the copper braiding and aluminum foil layers inside the cable that protect the cable from outside interference. The better the shielding, of course, the better the protection against RF interference. This is something to look for in a good cable. The problem is that most companies do not say much about the shielding. Make sure you buy a cable with good shielding!
Mediabridge cables have excellent shielding as you can see from the photos.
Regarding connectors, far more important than the pretty gold color is how tightly they fit onto your equipment. You don't want your connectors falling off your equipment.
Mediabridge connectors fit my equipment nice and snug.
Outside of these two considerations, there just is not much to a component cable regardless of the big brand hype.
Some things that have no bearing on performance? The outer jacket is just window dressing. It has zero impact on performance. Pretty connectors also have no impact on performance. Companies that charge a fortune for their cables, however, seem to put a lot of emphasis on these two things.
I find Mediabridge component cables to be the perfect balance of price and quality.
