Great functionality, good quality, not so great value May 28, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have to come some where in between the good and bad reviews here. This is definitely not "cheap ikea wood" but it's also not quite the overall quality I expected for well over a thousand dollars. The front doors are real, solid, well crafted wood, the top and bottom (which are identical pieces of wood) are very dense, very strong composite wood with a really nice finish. Most of the hardware is good, heavy duty stuff (for instance the door hinges), but not everything. The end panels are something much cheaper and thinner, possibly a wood/polymer composition... just not what I expected for the price. It rattles when you tap on it. Also the bolts DEFINITELY show on top. I read a review that said this before I bought, but I didn't realize we were basically talking about two stacked pennies on top in 8 places. The bolts are smooth and tapered, but still...you see them even from across the room. Not a huge deal, just not what I expected for well over a grand.
I'm very happy with the way my components are stored and how well they breathe. The adjustable shelves give you the ability to give your receiver all the room in the world. I even put my center channel in there and the sound is not effected whatsoever. IR remotes work perfectly with the doors closed. I have a very minimal number of wires coming out the back; just the wires to my TV, speakers, sub, and power cord to surge protector. This unit does NOT have a real "cord management system" as I believe the description hints at. What it does have is plenty of room to tuck away wires that you bundle and strong black plastic removable backing to cover it all up.
Overall, I would say this is a high quality unit with a brilliantly simple, well thought out design...just not QUITE worth the price tag. If I had to guess, I'd say they put a lot of money into R&D and not quite as much into the final product. If the price was down around $950 I would have given it 5 stars.
Salamander Synergy 237 AV Cabinet May 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This cabinet was easy to assemble provided you read directions and proceeded acordingly. Fit and finish are excellent. Very pleaseed with the way this produt was designed to let audio components breath.
One of the best TV Stands out there! April 21, 2008 I bought the Synergy 237 with black/aluminum posts from an online vendor. They had the best pricing and my stand was custom ordered with side covers and left and right doors with perforated steel. I opted not to get the center door to allow more air to my A/V Receiver. I also bought Salamander Saturn Wheels to replace the supplied foot level stands. The Synergy 237 require 8 wheels.
Before I continue I want to say that I bought this $1200+ TV Stand because of the quality of the parts, looks, shelf adjustability, shelf space, and customization. I was looking at the cheaper stands but the wood was too thin, shelves were in fixed positions, small shelf space, and some didn't have doors and if they did they had poor ventilation and looked ugly. My friends thought I was crazy spending that kind of money on a TV stand and teased me saying "Does it come with a TV at that price?".
Shipping took about a week and the stand came in several boxes. 2 of them were very heavy. I installed the Synergy 237 on a weekend and it took me about 3hrs to finish it! That doesn't include installing the back panel to do the wiring. Having the Saturn wheels installed made the rest of the job easier but I did get confused when installing the shelf pegs. I actually thought Salamander forgot to put more pegs but realized I did something wrong in the installation and that fixed my problem.
Overall I am very happy with my decision in getting the Synergy 237 with no regrets. If you're thinking about buying and installing the Synergy 237 then my advice to you is that you're going to need a lot of patience, common sense, and a good strong back when installing this stand.
Great Solution For Storing A/V Components February 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Synergy 237 (Black) was delivered in a timely manor and I must say that it exceeded my expectations. the heavy duty build quality and accurate tolerances sets it apart from the more typical A/V solutions. All necessary tools are included for assembly, which should take about two hours. Take the time to carefully follow the enclosed insructions in order to avoid redoing steps.
Be aware that this is a HEAVY box, so be prepared to have the means for getting it into the room of choice. I had the delivery man leave the box in the garage, then carefully carried the unit upstairs piece by piece. I also recommend going to Walmart or a hardware store for six "Super Sliders." I got the larger 4" sliders, which I placed under the unit's feet; this makes life a great deal easier whenever you need to get to the rear of the unit, especially on a carpeted surface.
The unit is now housing a 60" Sony SXRD TV, 110 lb. McIntosh amplifier, McIntosh Preamplifier, Toshiba XA2 HDDVD player, Rotel Power Conditioner, Rotel CD player, Cablevision DVR unit, Squeezebox, DAC1 unit and a pinnacle wireless A/V router. When the doors are closed, all one sees is the TV. It is a handome unit that really does its job quite well. My wife, Susan, loves the cabinet, and we both give it our highest recommendation.
