Configurable as either a main or surround speaker, the JobSite LST-RLS speaker installs unobtrusively in the wall, where it delivers crisp, rich sound without taking up valuable floor or shelf space. The mounting cutout measures 13.25 by 7.12 inches and sits 2.62 inches deep--a manageable size that easily holds the 14.5-by-8.25-inch speaker frame. Inside the speaker, meanwhile, sits dual 5.25-inch mica-filled polypropylene woofers with butyl rubber surrounds and a 1-inch liquid-cooled ElastoDynamic dome tweeter. The drivers combine to produce pleasing mids and intense highs, with an impressive (for a wall speaker) 45 Hz to 21 kHz frequency response. The speaker comes with all the necessary hardware for installation, including system mounting hardware for new or retrofit construction, a mounting template, and a paint mask. The latter item is handy for users who want to paint the white frames to match or contrast with their wall color. And though the speaker performs adequately by itself, it's really best when paired with other LST-RLS speakers in a stereo or surround-sound capacity. Listeners can even employ the speaker as a secondary speaker in an adjacent room.
The LST-RLS also offers a couple of extras above and beyond most in-wall speakers. The rear crossover switch, for instance, lets users configure the speaker for the best possible performance as either a front or rear surround speaker. The front position plays traditional stereo sound, while the surround position diffuses the sound field to create a more immersive listening experience. And should the treble or bass sound a bit too high or low, listeners can depress the front-panel Treble and Bass Cut switches, which help overcome diffraction from nearby hallways or corners.
The speaker terminals accommodate up to 12-gauge speaker wire (not included), which is best for speakers located within 30 feet of the receiver (for distances over 30 feet, listeners should consider 10-gauge cable). Additional features include rustproof aluminum grilles, rigid-braced ABS speaker baffles, moisture- and UV-resistant construction, and a recommended power handling of 10 to 150 watts. The speaker comes with a five-year warranty on parts and labor.
Note: JobSite recommends having the following tools on hand for installation: a stud locator, drywall saw, pencil, cordless Phillips screwdriver, two 1/8-inch slotted screwdrivers, wire stripper, and wire labels. In addition, it's difficult to move or reposition the speaker once the cutout is made, so listeners are advised to take their time when determining the ideal listening location.
