Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This Pioneer Bookshelf Speaker System features a pair of speakers with Bass-Reflex enclosures, a type of speaker enclosure that includes a "tuned" port to increase and extend bass response (by releasing some of the energy created by the inward movement of the woofer cone). Bass reflex designs are more power-efficient than acoustic suspension designs. They will play louder than acoustic suspension speakers when driven with the same amplifier power. These speakers have a wide frequency response that can even handle the latest in high-resolution music, SACD and DVD Audio.

5 out of 5 stars excellent speakers   November 2, 2008
I want to share sound between 2 computers so I needed some small speakers beside the monitor that I could connect to my stereo. These speakers aren't meant for bass but the highs are clean & clear. Nice speakers & the price is more than reasonable. As always, Pioneer came through for what I wanted.

These speakers are really nice; a great deal for the price. I am considering getting another pair for the living room.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Speakers   December 7, 2007
They were a pretty good value for the price.
Pros: Price, Size, Clearity
Cons: Not Very loud without distorting, Case is pretty fragile.

Overall if you are looking for great surround speakers dont buy these, but if you want to use as a small stereo system (as i did) for the price you will be happy with them

I grabbed a pair of these when they went on sale mainly for the purpose of practicing "experimenting" on some speakers (i.e. modding them). I also own a pair of the S-HF31-LR speakers, which have larger 6.5" drivers (check my other reviews), and I thought the HF31s were a good deal. I currently use the HF31s in my bedroom for music listening. The HF21 is a definite step down however. The build materials all look the same, and the sound is similar as well. However, the HF21 is much "brighter", and seems to distort in the high end much easier. This distortion can already be a problem in the HF31s at higher volumes, but I found that it crossed the line in the HF21s to the point where I wouldn't recommend them for listening to music. They are passable for listening to classical and slower music, but they didn't sound very good with rock. Also, at their smaller size they lack some bass kick.
However, they sound pretty good in the midrange, and for movie, TV, or playing video games, I think they will surpass most of the speakers out there that come packaged with lower end Home Theater in a Box solutions.
So, to summarize, I wouldn't recommend these speakers for music. I wouldn't really recommend them at all unless you simply don't want to spend the money on something better. At their low price though, you can't really complain with what you get, and the mid range detail that they produce sometimes is surprisingly good. Also, if you're willing to do a little speaker modifying yourself, there's some room for improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Tight Sound on a Budget   December 19, 2006

I've been a fan of Pioneer for car speakers and grabbed a pair of these bookshelf speakers as a secondary pair for the apartment. I don't think you can go wrong for the price, the sound is tight and punchy with good imaging. The sound is stronger on the high range, not much reach down low even with the tuned rear port. Paired up with a small subwoofer (that would allow these speakers to focus on mid-range) you'd have the start of a decent sound system. Speakers themselves are simple and cleanly designed: Solid black plastic, fairly small footprint with no mounting keyhole. Best use would probably be as rear surrounds or in a noisy ambient environment if used alone. With a subwoofer, the speakers would make for a nice apartment or bedroom system. In the end, still a good deal for the money.
