great center image November 15, 2008 I've owned this speaker for about 2weeks. They are toed in so that I'm hearing the inner 3rd of each speaker creating a center image. They're about 2 feet from the back and side wall with 8ft between them both. My receiver is a Pioneer elite SC-05. The Purity's and Abyss (martin Logan# are connecting to the pre-outs. I also have the Motif and Vignette #Martin Logan) connected via speaker connections. My music source is a Blu-ray Pioneer Elite BDP-05 FD. I've used Audio Quest speaker wire and HDMI for my connections. I have the X-over set for 50 because for now I found the Purity's do a good job of handling the low range and is enjoyable when listening to music.
I'm still in the break in period, but I've cranked the Purity's up and haven't experienced any distortion. When listening to music all the sound is perfectly centered and the different instruments seem to be separated during listening. If you are interested in these speakers I would recommend listening to the Blu-ray DVD by John Mayer "where the light is, live in los angeles" track 14 it's a blues song and there is allot of guitar playing and it sounded great. My other recommendation is sugar land "twice the speed of life" a lot of vocals on track 1 and 2. These speakers shined. Between both these tracks you should get an idea of what they can do. Someone else commented on the exterior box and they are right I own the black set. The speaker box isn't anything special, but it isn't bad either. You need to way your priorities performance or beauty. Unless you can afford both. This speaker didn't skimp on sound performance, but made it affordable for the new audiophile.
Before you buy, try Magnepan August 27, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've listened to these side-by-side with Magnepan speakers. There was no question, Magnepan is superior.
Just saying, try both - first.
Best speakers for the money! for Classical music buffs this is a must! June 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sorry, I don't have this particular speaker; I have Aeon i speakers, higher end than purity (not fully powered and requires good amplifiers that can drive 4 ohms speakers!). Before Aeon i, I used to have Aries speakers about 15 years ago. I have tried other high end speakers and for classical music this is one of the best sounding, best looking speakers that money can buy. Sound stage: when setup properly, you are sitting in front of the artists and get the feeling of live concerts. CLS doesn't give extra noises or tones the input signal so what you hear is almost what is there in the original recording (that means if you have a bad recording it will show!). Excellent mid range and highs, but a little poor in bass, but you can add a good subwoofer to take care of that. Speakers, if taken care of properly (no special caring but at least no destructive actions!), last forever. If you can afford, Martin logan is the best speaker that money can buy.
One other caveat: Like most high end speakers, these speakers have to broken in - meaning the sound gets better after the first few hours of using it.
How can you not be impressed? June 4, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Its unfortunate reviews are used as a way to criticize distribution methods and not discuss the product itself.
At $3k, these are not cheap speakers, but once you learn what is really inside of them, and what they are capable of, it is an impressive feat. Between the built-in amp, two very nice woofers, and a expensive electrostatic panel which is the result of 20 years of refinement, you are getting something very special. All of these features lead to...great sound...which is why you are buying these in the first place!
As for the concerns about the cherry finish - view this as a decision to spend the money on the sound quality and not on cosmetics. They don't look bad at all, but realize it is a vinyl cherry finish (as in, not real wood). An analogy would be the 'cheap' interior on the Corvette. There is a reason they can get $100k car performance out of a $50k car. Yet, when you are driving one, you no longer care about the feel of the plastic on the passenger air bag cover. If you are that concerned about the finish, MartinLogan does make speakers above these which feature real wood finishes.
If you love movies and music, these speakers will delight you. Forget the cherry finish, forget that you ordered them on Amazon. Set them up, dim the lights, and open your ears.
Superlative Performance April 23, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought a pair of these a month ago and I absolutely love the sound.. It is the next best thing to actually having the band in the room with you. The only down side is the Cherry Case is a little cheap looking but when you consider the whole package these speakers pack a lot of value.. Besides if you close your eyes and let them do what you really bought them for (tremendous sound quality) they are a solid investment and serious ear candy.
