Amazon.com Product Description Fill your home with sound, not stereo components. Keep your music collection at your fingertips, not in countless CD cases. Change the way you experience digital music. iPod Hi-Fi delivers crystal-clear, audiophile-quality sound in a clean, compact design. Hear, hear. Where did the stereo go? Just slide your iPod(1) into the built-in Universal Dock to turn on and tune in to digital music as you've never heard it before. From pumping bass to bright treble, iPod Hi-Fi delivers natural, room-filling sound. Close your eyes and you'd think you were listening to a huge stack of speakers. But iPod Hi-Fi measures just 17.0" x 6.6" x 6.9." Virtuoso performance As versatile as it is compact, iPod Hi-Fi incorporates thoughtful touches that make playing your music pure pleasure. Use the included Apple Remote to control music playback from anywhere in the room. Charge your iPod through the iPod Hi-Fi dock while you play music. Or take your show on the road courtesy of D-cell battery(2) power. All that makes iPod Hi-Fi pretty extraordinary. Just like iPod. Rock-solid enclosure The innovative design of iPod Hi-Fi transforms consumer-grade materials into the ideal enclosure for high-fidelity sound. The high-end sound of iPod Hi-Fi pours out of a double-walled plastic shell redesigned for maximum stiffness to prevent vibration and resonance--two major causes of sonic imperfection. And airtight sealing allows voluminous, unobstructed sound, effectively preventing buzzing and clatter. The right balance iPod Hi-Fi features three speaker cones custom designed to provide balanced sound across the frequency range. The result of numerous rigorous acoustic tests, this design delivers room-filling stereo imaging. The two 80 mm wide-range cones are set in dedicated chambers and isolated on the front plate, providing mid and high frequencies that sound vivid and bright. The natural bass of iPod Hi-Fi is generated by a 130 mm woofer. Thanks to the airtight sealing, the low frequencies are enriched inside the enclosure and then directed via tuned tubes through ports in the front. Energy bar No need to find a place to hide an unsightly power brick, as iPod Hi-Fi houses all power components internally. Or run iPod Hi-Fi on six D-cell batteries(2). Either way, it plays your music with big, warm sound. In DC mode, custom electronics manage the energy to enhance battery life and sound, even adjusting volume as necessary. And iPod Hi-Fi will charge your iPod from its batteries when the iPod runs low. Look who's talking Seamless integration means more than just plopping your iPod into a set of speakers. That's why iPod Hi-Fi actually communicates with your iPod. Just connect your iPod to the built-in Universal Dock and a simple, intuitive Speakers menu(3) lets you personalize iPod Hi-Fi to match your music. Take tone control, for starters. You can choose settings like "Normal," "Treble Boost," or "Bass Boost" to produce tones perfectly suited to your surroundings. You can also choose to display album art in a large, easily viewable format while iPod Hi-Fi plays. Set the backlight to remain on while playing and that album art positively pops off your iPod. Take charge iPod Hi-Fi not only plays nice with any iPod(4) using a dock adapter, it charges the iPod, too. Just drop your iPod into the built-in dock and you can play music and charge your iPod all at once. When plugged into an AC outlet, iPod Hi-Fi fully charges the iPod battery. And if you're running iPod Hi-Fi on D-cell batteries(2), it even provides your iPod with a charge so you can still play on the go. - iPod sold separately

Apple's Priorities Were in the Right Place August 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife and I have a high end home entertainment system that uses Paradigm Reference loudspeakers. I'll say right up front that the Apple Hi-Fi is not in the same league on the low end (bass). However, it is to Apple's credit that they did not try to artificially enhance the low end. The bass is smooth and tight to the physical limits of the small system.
Moving up the frequency range, the midrange and highs are excellent. One of the things that impressed me when we first got the Paradigm's was their projection and imaging. The Apple Hi-Fi projects voices nearly as well, but of course the drivers are much too close to each other to be able to image a large room. It can reach decent sound levels in one, however.
On the weight issue, I believe Apple made a conscious design decision to sacrifice weight for sound quality. It takes weight to make good sound: weight in the power supply, weight in the driver magnets and weight in the enclosure. I for one would not be willing to give up sound quality to get a lighter unit. The compact size also accentuates the weight - this thing is solid.
Apple's often mocked Hi-Fi hype is that it could be your only audio system. Well, if we were forced to downsize and give up our large entertainment system, then yes, I believe we could live with the Apple Hi-Fi as our sole music source.
A treat for sore ears... July 25, 2007 When I was a kid, I was fascinated by better quality sound than I was getting from TV and standard AM radio. I built a bunch of enclosures and amplifiers to see what a 10 year old could do with little money. The quest has continued even now that I'm 61. I've bought cheap "boogy boxes" that had better than average sound. I looked for what I intuitively knew what was possible. I've seen cheap stuff sound better than an Altec Lansing system that the owner said cost $30,000.
I know the serious freaks may complain about Steve Job's hyperbole about this product, but for me, it's rock solid. You can crank it up to max and it never distorts. What Apple gets out of a five inch woofer is amazing. And when you lift the device (and it's heavy), you gotta' know they didn't waste the weight just for the sake of forcing you to lift it; it's all about sound quality.
Just make sure you use this with plenty of space around it. It doesn't sound nearly as good in small inclosed areas. Larger rooms and outdoor spaces show it's potential.
Of the various sound products I've ever bought, this one is the most satisfying.
Much later: I find they've discontinued this item. Might be a bit of a cult around this product; I see very high prices for leftovers and used. Sigh! market decisions at their worst. C'mon Apple!
Totally Worth it. July 25, 2007 Sounds great, you can easy move it from place to place, adapts every ipod, I use it outside with out loosing any quality sound. I am very satisfy with the quality sound, The remote is small and practical, (just volume, forward and review)
GREAT SOUND July 12, 2007 I'm so glad I spent the extra money and went with the ipod home stereo. It sounds amazing and it really can kick out the sound. I was surprised at how heavy it was and i'm not going to really carry it around, but it is perfect for the home. It's nice it has the battery option. Totally worth the extra bucks.
Average plus sound quality July 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sound of low frequency component is somewhat blurred, making the sound focus less clear. Precise adjustment of resonance control in the box is needed and should be optimised. Design of the box looks modern and good, though. Bose system seems to be well-designed on excellent vibration analysis.
