Solid out-of-the-box system November 20, 2008 I've owned this for over a year and I don't have very many negative things to say about it. Pretty easy to setup, if you have any technical ability. The sub cranks out some bass. When I want to try and wake the neighbors I turn it up to about 22 which is pretty loud. It goes up to 40 or 50. "Transformers" sounded like something was going to come through the wall when I played it.
My only two gripes are the lack of choices for settings. The system offers a few pre set sound options but you can't customize any of them. The next is the HDMI inputs. There is only one so it came down to my cable box or my Xbox. The obvious choice would be the cable box as I watch it more than I play Xbox but I couldn't get it to pick up the signal, so the Xbox won by default. It sounds really good as well.
All in all a pretty decent system if you want surround sound right out of the box and don't want to spend an arm and a leg on individual components.
not recommend September 15, 2008 DVD player is not good. couple of my friends had samsung dvd player everybody has same problem.
Fire hazard July 28, 2008 My wife purchased this system for me last Christmas to go with my new Samsung plasma. After operating the system for approximately 3 months, one night it began sparking and smoking and almost caught fire. I sent the dvd unit to Samsung who, in turn, sent it to some third party for repair. Rather than replacing the unit, the repair company replaced some parts and sent the original unit back to me. The unit still reaks of burnt plastic smell. This may be an isolated incident, but beware and do not leave the unit turned on while away for your home. I have been satisfied with its operation otherwise.
The system goes Boom! June 10, 2008 The audio on this is ridiculous, it totally shakes my house, however...every once and a while, the picture goes blank on me, I don't know if my player is dirty or what, but it ticks me off, and worries me, because I bought it off of Amazon, but worse comes to worse it still makes a awesome receiver to use for my sound (hooked the blue ray through it already!) This plus blue ray is incredible!
Has a few minor quirks, otherwise excellent May 9, 2008 I love the way this sounds, and the functionality is almost entirely there, but there are a few nagging issues that keep me from giving it a full five stars. The remote could stand a few more buttons to speed up selection of surround modes and audio inputs, and a back light would have been a very nice addition. The insanely bright blue power LED is idiotic, but there is a dimmer button on the remote to temporarily disable it. Also, if you have multiple analog audio sources you'll need a switchbox because there is only one RCA AUX input on the back. Please note that I have not tried the DVD upscaling feature via HDMI as I have a hi-def projector with an excellent upscaler.
PROS:
Good, clean sound plus powerful bass. Relatively quiet cooling fan. Speaker aesthetics are pleasant. This will look great in your house. DVDs play clean and crisp without dropping frames or otherwise glitching. Can pull pics and vids from USB sources. Speakers have integrated jacks so you can use existing wire. Has HDMI pass-through, a very rare feature these days.
CONS:
Remote is wonky (but still functional) Supplied speaker wire is way too thin, and occasionally too short. Not enough RCA inputs. One is just not enough. Can't get the region code to turn off. (Code above no longer works)
