Junk July 17, 2008 To start with, the quality of video and sound is good for the price. I'm not an A/V guru, so it looks and sounds good enough for me...when it functions.
Not much more than a month after receiving the system, the video would turn black during DVDs, but the sound would continue. I would have to turn the unit off, then back on for the picture to come back. This would happen as frequently as every 5 to 10 minutes.
I called Samsung, and they had me "reset" the unit and call again with any problems. Well after being told to reset the unit three different times, I was told to try a different HDMI cable, and not use it at 1080i, to use 720p. Well this seemed shady to me, because I should be able to use it at any resolution I want.
FINALLY after a few calls, I was told I could send it in for repair, and they asked if I would be willing to pay for the shipping to the facility! Mind you this is still under warranty, and I of course said no I owuold not pay for the shipping. After 2 or 3 weeks, I received the unit back, although it was only supposed to be 7 to 10 days.
Two months later the DVD player is doing the same thing, screen going blank during DVDs. I called Samsung, asking to speak to someone about a replacement unit as opposed to it being repaired again. I was sent to Executive Customer Relations, only to be argued with by the call taker and told there was no way I could get a replacement unit, how case management wouldn't approve it, and that she would not transfer me to a supervisor. Finally she told me she would put in a request for case mgt to call me within 3 business days.
4 Days went by, and I called Exec. Customer Relations again, only to be told I would be called soon. A total of 7 days have gone by with no call.
IMO, Samsung has great TVs, but this home theater system is garbage and their customer service isn't much better.
UPDATE: 25Aug08 - A month and a half has gone by and no call from executive customer relations. I sent in my unit for repair, got it back 5 days later, and on the second DVD I tried to watch, the screen went blank again. This will be my third time to return this unit for repair. Terrible.
What I think July 5, 2008 This was a rebuilt unit so I had a few doubts, but I can say I worried for nothing. It plays and sounds great, easy to hook up and so far no problems. I was happy with the price and it arrived on time
Worth the money!! May 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this because of the price and the good reviews. You buy this unit and you will not be dissapointed. The sound is crisp and loud. You can pay more for other more expensive units but you don't have to. I tried many of the features on this unit and eveything works as it should. If you don't like the single dvd slot they offer a slightly more expensive unit with a multi dvd player. I don't review many products I buy but I am really pleased with this one. It actually does what it advertised to do and it does it well.
Adequate April 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a good functional piece of electronics. The video quality is adequate, but not substantially better than the basic DVD player that I already owned. The sound quality is good for the price point.
I have two main complaints, both centered around the fact that it doesn't interact as smoothly with the Samsung LCD television that I just bought as I would expect:
- When turned on (HDMI input), it automatically takes over the television. If you then switch sources while the player is on, even if the content is paused, you can't switch back without resetting the entire system. This is doesn't happen if you use AVI inputs, but then the picture quality is reduced.
- I expected the upconversion to be more intelligent, and to maintain a 4:3 aspect when the source is 4:3. Instead it automatically goes to 16:9. This is annoying, but can be fixed at the TV level.
Overall this is a reasonable system for the price. It is also something I will upgrade when I put together a full media room in the future.
NO Headphone Jack! February 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this for $220 at Fry's on Friday, and didn't get around to start setting it up until Monday. I was about to hook it up when I realized there was no headphone jack. I even called Samsung just to make sure I couldn't get some sort of accessory or something for it. No headphone jack. I brought it back and got the HT-x70. The HT-x50 and 70 have headphone jacks, but the 50 was silver, and I wanted all black. And now since they are 5 disc systems, it doesn't fit on the bookcase shelf I reserved for it. Other than that I am so far quite impressed with the 70, so I be the HT-x40 is good, if you don't care about using headphones. (The HT-x70 is quite loud, so I need the headphones if I'm going to get along with housemates.
