Amazon.com Product Description
Discover the difference great sound can make. This refurbished Onkyo HT-S770B home theater system includes a 6.1-channel Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic II audio/video surround receiver and a complementary 6.1-channel speaker package featuring 2-way front, center-channel, and surround speakers paired with a gut-thumping 220-watt subwoofer. You can use the HT-S770B with any existing DVD player or changer.

The 6.1-channel receiver provides full compatibility with the latest DVD soundtracks, encoded with either Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES. The receiver features Dolby Laboratories latest processing algorithm, Pro Logic IIx, which can automatically generate full 6.1-channel surround sound from any stereo or Dolby Digital source. The receiver also features HDTV-capable component video switching for optimum signal quality, and a wide range of input and output connections for compatibility with any A/V equipment.

The receiver delivers as much as 130 watts of continuous power into six 8-ohm speakers (such as those that come with the system) with no more than 0.08 percent THD to fill even most of the largest rooms with dynamic, nuanced sound. The speaker mapping works out to 2 each front (left/right), center (front/rear), and surrounds (left/right).

The package also includes six 2-way surround sound loudspeakers and a 10-inch subwoofer for high-quality reproduction of movie soundtracks and multichannel music. The front left and right satellites include a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter flanked by a pair of 5.25-inch woofers made of the company's highly regarded OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber). The center channel features a pair of 4-inch OMF woofers and the same tweeter in a horizontal design, and all 3 surround channels feature a single OMF woofer and tweeter arrangement for a tonally matched 360-degree soundstage.

The user-friendly design is evident in the system's color-coded inputs and outputs. Now you'll no longer need to worry about which cable goes to which input or output. Simply attach the color-coded speaker cable to its like-colored input or output for fast and easy connections.

Want to integrate the system with your existing stereo speakers? With the subwoofer's handy crossover selector, you can set the sub's upper frequency at 60, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz, depending on the lower boundary of your existing speakers' bass extension. This lets you more accurately match the performance characteristics of the subwoofer to your front speakers--as well as to the bass performance of the supplied front left/right speakers as they perform in your room; each position will result in a slightly different audible frequency response.

What's in the Box
A surround amplifier/receiver, 2 front speakers, 2 center-channel speakers, 2 surround speakers, a powered subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and all requisite interconnects and cabling.

1 out of 5 stars Leery of   December 8, 2006
We have owned Onkyo components for over 15 years now. When we decided to upgrade our existing Onkyo receiver to take advantage of the new technologies for home theater, we knew we wanted to stay with the Onkyo brand. After checking models/prices locally, we looked online and came across this system on [...] and decided to go with it. The system shipped and arrived as advertised but after setting it up we started having problems with it within weeks. We run all of our audio/video components through the receiver then out to TV & speakers. Our first problem was that when watching DVDs the picture would blank out for a few seconds periodically and was not isolated to just one damaged disk. The sound would continue on through these black outs without interruption. For troubleshooting I bypassed the Onkyo receiver with the video output from the DVD player directly into the TV. The video black outs stopped. When I contacted [...] about the problem, I was told that I had to deal directly with the retailer that shipped it, not Amazon. I contacted the retailer and was told that we needed to contact Onkyo for repair/assistance. Since we had a viable workaround to this issue we decided to skip the hassel of disconnecting/boxing/shipping the unit back and being without a stereo for 6 - 8 weeks or more. Well, about 8 months later the same thing started to happen when we were playing tapes in our VCR. Again, I bypassed the receiver directly to the TV and the problem stopped. We did have other "issues" with the Home Theater in a Box system, such as the speakers not being very good quality, the subwoofer box rattled and we found a loose piece of wood in it. We never had a problem with our previous Onkyo components. We have subsequently purchased a new Onkyo receiver from a local retailer and have not had any problems with it at all. Obviously we still like Onkyo brand and don't know if our problems were related to purchasing a "refurbished" system or not but it's hard not to draw that conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars sounds great with an ipod   July 8, 2005
I haven't had a chance to experience the full theatre experience yet, just music listening. However, this thing kicks out some serious power and clarity. the surround speakers are unnecesarily bulky (and do you really need a center-rear speaker?), but the main speakers and subwoofer rock. onkyo even has an available ipod dock, which would be a great addition to this system.

5 out of 5 stars Best Package For Low Budget Music Lovers!   June 27, 2005
I am a college student who plays music 20 hours a day, and watches movies about 4 hours a day. I Have this system running all day, everyday. I can safely say that after around 30 - 40 hours of pure home audio research, this is the best bang for your buck. owell, i dont have time to put more... but seriously, with 6 speakers, a sub, and the amazing receiver, its the best you are gonna get for under 500 bucks. If you are looking for better.... then go to a home audio dealer and ask for information on Integra or Integra Research products(oooooh... ahhhhhhh) . But this system is as good as any other Onkyo products.

5 out of 5 stars This System Rocks   April 8, 2005

I purchased this system on a whim and I'm blown away by the sound. My ever so kind neighbor hooked up the system to my 43" Widescreen Hitachi HDTV. Before I just had a awesome picture. Now its like being at a movie theatre but better. The sound will actually cause your heart rate to increase during intense scenes. You will want to rent a stack of action packed movies. Extremely powerful subwoofer, well beyond what you need for a medium sized theatre room. It actually shakes my entire house. Some reviews have indicated that you may want to purchase monster cables for the speakers but I can't imagine why you would need them. Incredible value.

5 out of 5 stars Onkyo is the best   February 27, 2005

I recently sold my Onkyo HT-S760 model to get the 770 and let me tell you
it was worth it. This system is untouchable when it comes to HTIB, sure
it's not audiophile perfect, it's not ment to be, If you are an
audiophile you are not going to buy a home theater in a box anyways you
are going to spend around$2000-$5000 building your own.. It is the best
system you could buy for $399 (I got mine at Fry's). The Prologic 2x is
a real treat. and the up conversion for Dolby Digital and DTS makes the
pot even sweeter.(you can set it so that it will play 5.1 movies in
6.1). A feature sorely lacking on the previous model. 6.1 is definetly
worth it, I was skeptical at first when I bought the 760, but now I
cannot live without it. The system doesn't handle music that well but
it is a home theater system and it delivers on that (I watched the
grudge and actually jumped when the music got loud twice). The remote
is big and will take a few weeks to learn all of the features even for
someone like me who had owned Onkyo's previous model. Onkyo is the only
HTIB company I would buy from, I had Sony HTIB's but now they are
horrible. Every one I have tried needs the volume to be up to 35- 40
just to be heard. This system is extremely powerfull,, and extremely
impressive, they actually out did themselves with 1 coaxial , and 3
optical inputs.. This is the one to own, I cannot believe I got this
much power for only $399. Make sure to upgrade the speaker wire, and
sub cable to Monster and you will be good to go.
